Packaging the Future Sustainably

As a local company with a global mindset, we consider environmental responsibility as an integral part of our business activities. Environmental issues underpin Varnas’ planning, as is evident in our strategies and goals. We are committed to prevent potential and minimize existing negative consequences for the environment.

  • We strive to continuously improve the environmental performance of our operations regarding raw materials, emissions, energy, and waste

  • We seek collaboration to reduce environmental impacts along the value chain

  • We aim to design our products based on sustainable criteria with minimal impact on the environment, low material usage, and high recyclability

OUR SUSTAINABILITY GOALS

  • We are working towards that 100% of our packaging will be recyclable by 2025

  • We have committed to reducing our carbon footprint by using at least 60% of renewable energy with the installation of solar panels by 2025.

  • To reduce 30% of plastics used in our packaging by 2025

  • 100% of our internal waste to be recycled by 2022

OUR CURRENT INITIATIVES

Continuous R&D on the following principles to lower the environmental footprint of ours and our partners;

Since 2015, Varna has had agreements with recyclers to manage our internal plastic waste of 20MT per month and of that 90% of recycled materials have been added to the circular economy.

We also follow international guidelines on designing for a circular economy and promote building understanding of end-of-life processes, giving practical advice on circular economy design principles and advising on sustainable design choices for recyclability to our partners.

We are a member of the committee along with The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) and industry stakeholders who have proposed an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiative to address the environmental issues created by flexible packaging in Sri Lanka by reducing flexible packaging volumes and strengthen flexible packaging recycling efforts initially focusing on collection.
